Updating Certain Content on Page Every 2 to 5 minutes

Project Description
I have a blockchain explorer I created quite a few years ago. I have been completely redesigning the explorer and adding new features.
I am now wanting to make certain content within the page update every 2-5 minutes. I have worked with AJAX in the past and been successful; however, I've not been successful thus far for this project.
I believe part of the issues is as follows:
File Number 1:
Is all of the content that is to be rendered on the various explorer pages. It is a php file where all the html is echoed out. Each section of code is within PHP functions so they can be called from other files
File Number 2:
Call functions from File Number 1 so those functions are rendered to the page.
I have not been able to figure out a way to update the content within those functions so content on the page can be updated with the user having to reload the page.
